7 Feb-7 March 2010. This group exhibition dedicated to the human tongue features work by 44 emerging and established Egyptian artists. Participants include Enas El-Sediek, Adel El-Siwi, Ayman El-Semary, Ahmed Askalany, Gamal Meleka and Ayman Lotfy. The works on show range from murals, metal sculptures and portrait photographs to video art and large-scale installations and include Slip of the Tongue by the young artist Mohamed Fahmy, a series of paintings and vinyl prints pasted onto windows and walls. more

2-25 Feb 2010. This exhibition presents a large selection of oils on canvas by the Egyptian artist Kamal El Sarrag. El Sarrag studied fine arts in Cairo, where he graduated in 1960, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where he graduated in 1967. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions In Cairo, Venice and Brussels. more

20 Jan-20 Feb 2010. This exhibition presents recent pottery and paintings by the Egyptian ceramic artist Nabil Darwish. Darwish uses vivid, metallic colours over a dark matte background to create a unique appeal. The use of metallic luster, common to many contemporary Egyptian artists, has its roots in the ancient Egyptian, Coptic as well as Islamic tradition. more

21 Feb 2010. This year the annual Nadia Younes Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Amre Moussa, secretary-general of the League of Arab States and former minister of foreign affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. This lecture, which is a yearly appointment at the American University in Cairo (AUC), is held in memory of Nadia Younes, a United Nations administrator who died in the August 2003 during the terrorist attack against the UN headquarters in Iraq. The lecture starts at 17.30. more

Chinese culture week opened in Cairo with a fashion show presenting three designers, Liu Huili, Li Liming and Chen Wen at the Cario Opera House. The culture week focuses on traditional culture, with musical instruments, martial arts, tea customs and costumes, all leading up to the Chinese New Year on 14 February. more

8 Feb 2010. The Centre for Translation Studies hosts a lecture on translation by the award-winning Arabic-English translator Humphrey Davies. Davies has worked in Egypt, Palestine, Sudan and Tunisia for non-governmental community development programmes and he is currently based in Cairo. Since 1997 he has been working on the translation of an Egyptian work from the Ottoman period. He has also worked on a number of translations for the AUC Press. In 2006 he won the inaugural Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation with his translation of Elias Khoury’s The Gate of the Sun and he won the first “Arabic Booker” award in 2007/2008 with his translation of Bahaa Taher’s Sunset Oasis. 18 Jan-18 Feb 2010. This exhibition is the result of several workshops organised by the male Egyptian artist Hany Rashed with young artists from around Egypt and other countries including Italy. The black and white printed paintings on show were made by Rashed using the monoprint technique, which always uses a pattern or part of an image which is constantly repeated in each print. Rashed addresses, among other issues, the different forms and layers of Egyptian society. more
