From Homeland to Heaven

2 January-2 February 2012. This exhibition, entitled From Homeland to Heaven, displays the paintings by the Egyptian artist Samir Fouad. Fouad was born in Heliopolis in 1944 and brought up in an art- loving environment, which influenced his artistic talent. He studied engineering at the Cairo University and started working with computers, but he never abandoned his passion for arts and especially for watercolours. This self-taught artist was particularly influenced by the British watercolourists, such as Turner and Russell Flint. Since 1984 he became a professional artist in the Egyptian art scenery. more

Scenes by George Fikry

15 January-1 February 2012. This painting exhibition, entitled Scenes, features a series of works by the Egyptian artist George Fikry. In 2000, Georges Fikry obtained his PHD in Fine Arts and he is currently Professor at the Art Education Faculty of the University of Helwan. Fikry is also a member in the Plastic Arts Syndicate as well as member as many other art committees and associations, such as the Suzanne Mubarak Arbitration Committee and the International Association of Art (AICA). Since 1989, Fikry has participated in more than 50 international private and public exhibitions. In 2006, Fikry participated to the Venice Biennale as well as to the 10th International Egyptian Biennale, where he won the first prize. This versatile artist received various awards and recognitions in the fields of drawing photography, engraving and painting. more


Al Khawaga & Johnny Stories, 2011

This exhibition, entitled Al Khawaga & Johnny Stories 2011, displays a series of works by Hala El-Koussy as well as a collection of archival images, original photographs, documents, advertisements and books, which tell the history of the relationship between the local inhabitants and the foreigners in Cairo. Cairo is depicted in its contentious relationship to its colonial history. The movie In Search of a City, which will be projected on this occasion, takes the viewer on a journey in modern day Cairo. more


The Politics of Representation

This exhibition brings together posters, stickers, banners, fliers, photographs and other ephemera produced throughout the month by the numerous Egyptian political parties, that will run for parliamentary elections for the first time in the recent history on 28 November 2011. The material on display has been used in the recent months by the parties for their public campaigns to communicate their values and visions. There is also an analysis of the different visual strategies, iconography, symbols, colors and designs each party chose to identify with. more

20 November-15 December 2011. This exhibition, entitled Portraits, features a series of recent sculptures by the emerging Egyptian artist Ahmed Askalany. The artist was inspired by his great passion for politics and created busts and heads of well-known Egyptian public figures. His creations were displayed among the others at the Egyptian pavilion of the Venice Art Biennale in 2009. more


The 22nd Youth Salon

14 Nov-8 Dec 2011. The 22nd edition of the Youth Salon, entitled Change, brings together a myriad of works of art by young, emerging artists. This annual competition is reserved to young artists, whose works are selected by a committee and displayed at the Salon. This year out of 559 participating artists, only 264 were accepted and awarded with various prizes. Since this is the first Salon after the political upheavals of 25 January, a large number of artworks reflect Egypt’s changing reality. Among the artists are Chady El-Noshokaty, Ahmed Bedeir, Marwa Adel, Wafaa Yehia, Hasna Hanafy, Nahla Ahmed, Mohamed Abla, Ahmed Askalany and Hany Rashed. more


Towards a More Sustainable Built Environment

5-8 December 2011. This workshop, followed by a general public discussion, will focus on a new approach to energy and more generally on the environment. An increase in the world’s population coupled with a decrease in fossil energy sources requires a new approach to energy and to the environment in general, including sustainable concepts of urban planning and buildings. The famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy made a major study on construction in arid cliamtes in the 1950s, in which he re-discovered the qualities of traditional design and the importance of intelligent air circulation in and around the buildings. Event starts at 19.00. more

Villadsen was educated as a Montessori kindergarten director and has been living in Europe, Asia and Africa. Her work with children inspired her career as a painter. more


Libya: The Road to Freedom

This exhibition entitled Libya: The Road to Freedom, displays the photographs by Amr Abdallah and Mohamed Messara, who documented the civil war , better known as Libyan revolution. On 15 February 2011 in Benghazi protests started against the government of Colonel Gaddafi (1942-2011), These protests escalated into a rebellion that soon spread across Libya. On this occasion the anti-Gaddafi forces established an interim governing body, the so called National Transitional Council. On 23 October 2011, after several months of civil war and the capture and death of the Colonel, the National Transitional Council officially declared the liberation of Libya and the official end of the war. more
