Culture: Egyptian tombs reveal new discoveries

Wednesday, January 6th 2010

The discovery of two tombs at the Sakkara necropolis site south of Cairo could reveal new information about the burial and religious rites of ordinary Egyptians, rather than of royalty according to Egypt’s chief archaeologist, Zahi Hawass.

The tombs, one of which is very large, date back 2,500 years to the 26th dynasty. They seem to have been reused on various occasions and were probably plundered in Roman times, although they still contain important artefacts, coffins, human and animal remains.

The tombs have been found close to the entrance of the necropolis at Sakkara which was used as a burial site for the ancient city of Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom.
