Sport: Cairo celebrates Egypt Cup of Nations win
Sunday, January 31st 2010Jubilant fans took to the streets of Cairo in celebration on 31 January following Egypt’s 1-0 win over Ghana in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. The victory gives the national team an unprecedented third consecutive win in the pan-African tournament and its seventh trophy overall.
The victory has helped make up for the disappointment felt by many Egyptians at their team’s exclusion from this year’s football World Cup in South Africa after the Pharaohs lost to their arch-rivals Algeria during an ill-tempered eliminator match last November.
Ghana’s Black Stars played an organised game but consistently failed to capitalise on their chances. The team will be hoping to perform better in South Africa, where it will be one of six African teams playing. The others are Algeria, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and the hosts South Africa.
